Sternocleidomastoid...some people call this muscle the ‘king of migraines’. You can feel it pop out on the left if you turn your head to the right. I’ve been working with a few people recently that complain about headaches, face pain, ear pain, watery eyes and even loss of balance and dizziness. All of this CAN be caused by this muscle that is interesting to look at: It attaches to the back of the skull as well as the sternum and collarbone (that’s where the complicated name comes from). You want it to get the chance to lengthen and shorten at either end. To let go at one end while the other one contracts. Kind of like the reins between rider and a horse’s head... When skull, ribage and collarbone move well together it allows this rein-like change in length/tension. If they don’t, there might be a bit of a fight going on between the rider and the horse. Conflicts in the body never lead to good outcomes 😉 But why might the skull not be moving or letting go? Whiplash, concussion, knock on the head? Why might the rib cage not be moving? Impact to the chest or back, or emotional trauma/stress? (breathing/withdrawing?) Or is a collarbone or shoulder injury to blame and the lower part of the muscle is not letting go/unable to move?
