Running doesn’t damage your hips!! 🥳 . Recent research (Horga et al. 2021) has found that most *pain free* runners have some hip joint changes on a scan. In 90% of participants in this study hip ‘abnormalities’ were seen on MRI. (Although if 90% of people have them maybe they’re not abnormal 🤔). . The good news is that training for and completing a marathon didn’t worsen these findings or damage the hip joints. This is consistent with research from the same group in the knee and lumbar spine (see my timeline for details). . This is reassuring for us and the runners we treat but it isn’t a green light to just crack on and train through pain! We still need to help runners find a manageable level with their training that isn’t causing lasting flare ups then gradually progress towards their goals. .
