Does timing matter for return to sport following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction? 🤔 📋 A prospective cohort study on 159 young athletes (mean age: 21.5) who returned to sport following an ACL reconstruction investigated the association between sustaining a second ACL injury with: (1) Time to return to sport (2) Symmetrical muscle function (3) Symmetrical quadriceps strength at the time of return to sport KEY FINDINGS ➡ Athletes who had returned to sport before 9 months after their ACL reconstruction had an approximately 7-fold higher rate of second ACL injury compared with those who returned at 9 months or later. ➡ There were no associations between sustaining an ACL re-injury and achieving symmetrical muscle function or quadriceps strength. ➡ Delaying return to sport until at least 9 months after ACL reconstruction confers a potential reduction in subsequent ACL injury rate.
