Scapulohumeral rhythm is the term that describes the coupled actions of the arm at the shoulder joint with the scapula at the scapulocostal joint.

Here we see the frontal-plane action of abduction of the arm at the shoulder joint with scapular upward rotation at the scapulocostal joint.

We usually think of the arm abducting 180 degrees, and it does relative to the trunk. But fully 1/3 of that motion (60 degrees) occurs not at the shoulder joint, but at the scapulocostal joint… in other words, movement of the scapula.

Importance?? When evaluating a client/patient with limited humeral abduction, we need to assess not only arm musculature but also scapular musculature.

So, for example, decreased arm abduction could be due to tight scapular downward rotators, which prevent the necessary scapular upward rotation. So assess the pectoralis minor, and also the levator scapulae and rhomboids.

and btw, for the scapula to move fully, the clavicle must also move… so more to assess 🤔

Perhaps the term should be “claviculo-scapula-humeral rhythm”
