Is shockwave effective for runners with Bone Stress Injuries (BSI)? 🏃‍♂️ . Intriguing new study from Beling et al. (2023)! On the surface it seems most runners did well following shockwave treatment. However, the return to running times don’t see overly impressive!.. . “Acute BSI (treatment < 3 months from diagnosis) had an average return to run time of 12.0 ± 7.5 weeks, while runners with delayed or non-union had a longer average return to run time (19.8 ± 14.8 weeks, p = 0.032)” . Plus this was a retrospective study with no control group. There were also several aspects to treatment including physiotherapy (which wasn’t defined), advice on Calcium and Vitamin D intake and a graded return to running (including using an anti-gravity treadmill in some cases). So it’s hard to know what (if anything) had a positive effect. . The research on shockwave for BSI in runners is limited and has mixed results so I’d sum this up as ‘promising, but more research needed’! What do you think? 🤔 .
