Combine strength training and plyometrics to enhance running performance! 🏃🏽♀️🏋🏼♂️ A recent systematic review including nearly 900 runners has found that combining high load strength training with plyometrics was most effective for improving running performance (Llanos-Lagos et al. 2024) During running we need to be able to produce enough force and do so quickly enough to be efficient. High load strength training (in this case at or above 80% of one rep max) can improve force production while the plyometrics can improve how rapidly we’re able to produce this force. So it’s a good combination that can increase running economy. It can be challenging programming this into a runner’s schedule. My preference is usually to include plyometrics either as part of a running warm up or prior to heavier loading. The emphasis with plyometrics is speed and explosive intent so reps and sets start relatively low and it’s usually best not to perform them in a fatigued state (e.g. immediately after running heaving lifting). The high loads used in this study were approximately 7 rep max and above. Injured runners will usually need to start with lighter loads and build up as symptoms allow. As with any training intervention high loads and plyometrics need to be introduced at the right stage of recovery and adapted to suit the needs of each individual.
